TWO IN NEW YORK SENTENCED FOR ILLEGAL SEWER DISCHARGE

Ron Jagielo and MRS Plating Inc., both of Lockport, N.Y., were sentenced on April 18, for violating the Clean Water Act. Jagielo, whose job involved managing wastes at the MRS facility, was sentenced to serve one year in prison, one year supervised release and was ordered to pay a $4,000 fine. MRS Plating was sentenced to pay a $90,000 fine, pay $30,000 in restitution to the city of Lockport and serve three years probation. This is the second conviction of MRS Plating for illegal discharges. The current charges arise from discharges of hazardous plating wastes into the Lockport sewer system during 1997. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the Lockport Department of Utilities, the Lockport Police Department and the New York State Attorney General’s Office. The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Buffalo.
