EASIER REPORTING, EASIER ACCESS ARE GOALS OF XL PROJECT IN NEW MEXICO

FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2000

EASIER REPORTING, EASIER ACCESS ARE GOALS OF XL PROJECT IN NEW MEXICO

On Sept. 22, EPA signed a Project XL agreement with the NASA White Sands Test Facility located near Las Cruces, N.M., to implement an electronic reporting project that will facilitate information management and compliance reporting. This XL project is designed to improve both government and public access to higher quality regulatory information, while reducing reporting and processing costs. In addition, NASA will provide on its web site a public access section to provide environmental data and more than 100 regulatory reports, including information related to historical sites, groundwater quality, Geographic Information System (GIS) reports, ISO certification, recycling, waste minimization, environmental impact assessments, and community right to know issues. To implement this innovative system, NASA requested flexibility from federal and state regulations that require a written signature or paper submission for compliance reports and permit information. This project is another step in the Administration’s effort to make more environmental information available to more people over the Internet. President Clinton has launched a new website which provides the public with one-stop access to information and services from 20,000 federal agency websites: http://www.FirstGov.gov
