EMISSION STANDARDS PROPOSED FOR RECREATIONAL AND INDUSTRIAL ENGINESFOR RELEASE: TUESDAY, NOV. 21, 2000 EPA is seeking comment on plans to reduce emissions from recreational vehicles and industrial equipment. Comments are also requested on possible emission reductions for highway motorcycles, since current emission standards were established more than 20 years ago. Reducing emissions from these engines used in snowmobiles, dirt bikes, all terrain vehicles and a variety of industrial equipment will help reduce the harmful effects of ozone, carbon monoxide and particulate matter. These engines account for 11 percent of hydrocarbon emissions, nine percent of carbon monoxide emissions and three percent of nitrogen emissions. Since 1994, the EPA has established emissions control programs under the Clean Air Act for various classes and categories of nonroad engines, including those used in farm, construction, marine, locomotive, and lawn and garden equipment. Comments will be accepted on this proposal until Jan. 26, 2001. Instructions on submitting written comments will be published in the Federal Register.
