PA EPA/STATE AGREEMENT ON CORE PERFORMANCE MEASURES

FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 1997

EPA/STATE AGREEMENT ON CORE PERFORMANCE MEASURES

EPA and state environmental commissioners agreed today on a set of Core Performance Measures which will be used for tracking environmental progress across the states. These measures were negotiated between EPA and the Environmental Council of the States (ECOS) which represents state environmental commissioners. This is the first time that a single set of performance measures has been developed by the two. An EPA/state agreement, which established the National Environmental Performance Partnership System, identifies national priorities and shows how different program components relate to national environmental goals. This set of measures gives greater emphasis to outcomes than government activities. A joint statement by EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner, ECOS President Harold Reheis and other EPA and state leaders can be obtained by calling the EPA Press Office at 202-260-4355. For further information, contact Chuck Kent at 202 260-2462 or Tina Parker at 202 260-3660.
