PA EPA SEEKS PUBLIC REVIEW OF NEW WASTE MINIMIZATION SOFTWARE

FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, AUGUST 29, 1997

EPA SEEKS PUBLIC REVIEW OF NEW WASTE MINIMIZATION SOFTWARE

EPA recently announced a 60-day extension on the comment period on a new beta-test version software package that prioritizes chemicals according to their persistence, bioaccumulation, toxicity and quantity. This software and its accompanying documents are intended to assist hazardous waste generators, government agencies, technical assistance centers and others involved in waste minimization by providing a tool to assist in identifying waste minimization priorities for these chemicals in hazardous waste. EPA’s 1994 Waste Minimization National Plan calls for a voluntary 50 percent reduction in the presence of the most persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic chemicals in hazardous wastes by 2005. The comment period has been extended to Oct. 7. Copies of these materials can be obtained on the Internet at http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/hazwaste/minimize or through the RCRA/Superfund Hotline at 1-800-424-9346 or 703-412-9810.
