NTC ROBERT HICKMOTT, HAS ANNOUNCED PLANS TO LEAVE EPA

FOR RELEASE: FEBRUARY 26, 1997

Robert Hickmott, EPA Associate Administrator for Congressional and Legislative Affairs, has announced plans to leave EPA effective March 14 and join the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as Counselor to Secretary Andrew Cuomo.

EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner said, "Four years ago, I asked Bob Hickmott to come with me to EPA. During his time here, Bob has consistently been one of EPA's most effective strategists and leaders. As one of my closest advisors, he helped advance many important pieces of legislation, making strong public health and environmental protections a reality for Americans. He was instrumental in the passage of the Food Quality Protection Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1996 -- two bills that have dramatically increased health and environmental protections for all Americans, particularly for children."

Hickmott joined the Clinton Administration in January 1993. As Associate Administrator for Congressional and Legislative Activities, he served as the principal advisor to Administrator Carol M. Browner on all congressional and legislative issues, and helped develop and implement the Administration's environmental agenda.

At HUD, Hickmott will serve as a senior member of Secretary Cuomo's management and policy-development team. Hickmott will also serve as a senior advisor to the Secretary on congressional and intergovernmental relations, external constituencies, and as a liaison to the White House and other cabinet agencies.

Julie Anderson, currently Hickmott's Legislative Director, will serve as Acting Associate Administrator until a replacement is named.
