NTC ASSOC. ADMIN. FOR REG. OPER. ANNOUNCED PLANS TO LEAVE EPA

FOR RELEASE: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1997

Shelley Metzenbaum, EPA Associate Administrator for Regional Operations and State/Local Relations, has announced plans to leave U.S. EPA effective March 10 and join the University of Maryland's School of Public Affairs as Senior Fellow and Visiting Professor. At Maryland, Dr. Metzenbaum will focus on strengthening the School's Executive Management program in the environmental area and for state and local governments.

EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner said, "Shelley Metzenbaum did an exceptional job as Associate Administrator for Regional Operations and State/Local Relations. Shelley has effectively lead our regional management team in delivering better service to the American people. She has also been instrumental in Agency efforts to redefine and improve our relationship with state and local governments."

Metzenbaum joined the Clinton Administration in July 1993. During her tenure, EPA enjoyed a dramatic improvement in its cooperative efforts with both states and localities to provide better environmental and public health protection for the American people. Shelley was also instrumental in developing and managing an innovative new program at EPA, the Sustainable Development Challenge Grant program, a competitive grant designed to leverage local investment for sustainable development projects. She also guided the design and implementation of the National Environmental Performance Partnership system, a new successful approach to negotiating state/EPA agreements.
