PA EPA AWARDS POLLUTION PREVENTION GRANTS TO STATES AND TRIBES; ESTABLISHES REGIONAL INFORMATION NETWORK

FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1997

EPA AWARDS POLLUTION PREVENTION GRANTS TO STATES AND TRIBES;
ESTABLISHES REGIONAL INFORMATION NETWORK

EPA’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics has awarded nearly $5 million in grants to assist state and local environmental programs aimed at preventing pollution and provided additional funds to establish nine regional centers to support state prevention efforts. This year, 48 states and one Indian Tribe received grants through the program, which is intended to help state and tribal governments sustain existing programs and to incorporate pollution prevention into their environmental strategies and service delivery systems. EPA’s Pollution Prevention Incentives for States program was started in 1989 and has since contributed to the development of a broad range of state and tribal outreach and training programs focused on pollution prevention and the availability of technical assistance to small and medium-sized businesses. In addition, for the first time, EPA made funds available for the start up of a regional information network to support state prevention programs and efforts. The regional centers will collect, review and distribute state program information nationally and minimize duplication of effort in the development and collection of information. The centers also will establish information standards and a peer review process to ensure quality information. Eight of the nine centers have been named and are operating, including locations in California, Hawaii, Illinois, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Texas, and Washington. The ninth center located in Massachusetts will begin operations later this year.
