PA EPA ISSUES FINAL DRINKING WATER CONTAMINANT CANDIDATE LIST

FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1998

EPA ISSUES FINAL DRINKING WATER
CONTAMINANT CANDIDATE LIST

EPA has issued a final list of contaminants that it will consider in setting priorities under the Safe Drinking Water Act. These contaminants are not now subject to regulation, but are known or anticipated to occur in public water systems. The list will be used over the next few years to determine research, health advisory and regulatory priorities. EPA currently regulates 83 contaminants in drinking water. The new contaminant candidate list was developed with input from interested parties representing a broad spectrum of the American public. The list will be published in the Federal Register shortly. The general public can also receive the list from EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791 and via the Internet at: http://www.epa.gov/ogwdw.
