JOHNS RIVER AS CLINTON ADMINISTRATION AMERICAN HERITAGE RIVER EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner will travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to announce the designation of the St. Johns River as an American Heritage River on Thursday, July 30, at 11a.m. Browner will be joined by Jacksonville City Council President Don Davis and Former U.S. Representative Charlie Bennett. Browner’s announcement is one of several events across the nation on Thursday to recognize the 14 rivers designated by President Clinton and Vice President Gore this week as American Heritage Rivers. The American Heritage Rivers Initiative -- announced by President Clinton in his 1997 State of the Union Address -- provides focused federal support to America’s great rivers and brings together federal, state and local governments in partnership with business, environmental and community groups to restore and protect these rivers and return them to centers of cultural and economic vitality for future generations. The St. Johns River, nominated for American Heritage River designation by the City of Jacksonville, is the longest river in Florida, stretching 310 miles in length, and drains one-sixth of the state. It houses one of the largest deep water ports on the Atlantic, generating $1.38 billion from commercial and sport fishing, and is a major thoroughfare for ship and barge transportation. Clinton Administration cabinet officials are traveling to rivers across the nation to announce the 14 American Heritage Rivers, which include: the St. Johns River (Fla.), New River (N.C., Va., W.Va.), Blackstone and Woonasquatucket Rivers (Mass., R.I.), Connecticut River (Conn., Vt., N.H., Mass.), Cuyahoga River (Ohio), Detroit River (Mich.), Hanalei River (Hawaii), Hudson River (N.Y.), Rio Grande (Texas), Potomac River (D.C., Md., Pa., Va., W.Va.), Upper Mississippi River (Iowa, Ill., Minn., Mo., Wis.), Lower Mississippi River (La., Tenn.), Upper Susquehanna and Lackawanna Rivers (Pa.), and the Willamette River (Ore).
