PA FLORIDA MEN INDICTED FOR VIOLATIONS OF THE RESOURCE CONSERVATION AND RECOVERY ACTFOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 1998 FLORIDA MEN INDICTED FOR VIOLATIONS OF THE RESOURCE CONSERVATION AND RECOVERY ACT On April 20, Izhak Ponie of Pompano Beach, Fla., and John Martin of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., were indicted in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida in Miami for violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Ponie was charged with illegally transporting hazardous wastes to the Hollywood/Ft. Lauderdale International Airport. Martin was charged with the unlawful disposal of hazardous wastes. These charges arose from the illegal dumping of drums containing highly ignitable hazardous wastes at the airport, which is not a legally-authorized hazardous waste disposal site. If convicted, both men face maximum sentences of up to five years in prison and/or maximum fines of up to $50,000 per day of violation. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General, the FBI and the Florida Marine Patrol.
