PA EPA REGISTERS NEW BEAR REPELLENT PRODUCT

FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1998

EPA REGISTERS NEW BEAR REPELLENT PRODUCT

EPA has registered a new bear repellent containing the active ingredient capsaicin, a product extracted from hot peppers. The new repellent was developed by Bushwacker Backpack and Supply Co. Inc., Bigfork, Mont., and will be marketed under the trade name of “Counter Assault Bear Deterrent.” The repellent has been designed for consumer use and has been proven to act as an effective bear deterrent when used as directed. The registration of this product, and hopefully others to follow later this year, is the result of efforts by the Agency to work with small businesses that manufacture animal-deterrent products and familiarize them with the process of registering their products. Companies that register their repellents with EPA must demonstrate their effectiveness and meet other important health and environmental standards. The Agency plans to continue its work with manufacturers of bear repellents to ensure their products provide consumers with protection in situations where there is the potential for a dangerous encounter with a bear.
