Hazardous Waste Data
RCRAInfoRCRAInfo is EPA's comprehensive information system, providing access to data supporting the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) of 1976 and the Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments (HSWA) of 1984. RCRAInfo replaces the data recording and reporting abilities of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Information System (RCRIS) and the Biennial Reporting System (BRS).The RCRAInfo system allows tracking of many types of information about the regulated universe of RCRA hazardous waste handlers. RCRAInfo characterizes facility status, regulated activities, and compliance histories and captures detailed data on the generation of hazardous waste from large quantity generators and on waste management practices from treatment, storage, and disposal facilities. Using cutting-edge technology and a simple architecture, RCRAInfo provides a convenient user interface for the program staff and managers of the EPA and its State and Tribal partners. RCRAInfo data is made available to the public through EPA's Envirofacts Data Warehouse through monthly extracts or through the Right to Know Network. The Right to Know Network provides free access to numerous databases, text files, conferences on the environment, housing, and sustainable development. It is operated by two nonprofit organizations - OMB Watch and the Unison Institute - and funded by various government agencies and foundations, including EPA. The same flat files that are provided to Envirofacts and the Right to Know Network are also available - free of charge - for downloading from the EPA publically accessible FTP server (ftp://ftp.epa.gov/rcrainfodata/brfiles/). A comprehensive web-enabled help module (RCRAInfo_Flat_File_WebHelp.zip) is also available to explain the flat file specifications and data element values. RCRA Burden Reduction InitiativeOn June 18, 1999, EPA proposed to reduce the reporting requirements at hazardous waste facilities. For more information, visit the burden reduction site.Waste Information Needs (WIN)/Informed InitiativeReinvention of information management in the EPA hazardous waste program began in 1994, when the Office of Solid Waste (OSW) revised its strategic plan and identified new information management objectives. The Waste Information Needs (WIN) Initiative evolved from these objectives. EPA's WIN Initiative partnered with the States' Information Needs for Making Environmental Decisions (Informed) project. The joint WIN/Informed Initiative is an effort to reassess the information needed to run the hazardous waste program under RCRA. Some of the information covered by the project includes who is regulated, what is being regulated, and what kinds of activities and milestones must be tracked for the hazardous waste program. The Initiative seeks to improve data quality and meet the needs of EPA, states and tribes, and public and private sector customers for timely and accurate information about hazardous waste management. The WIN/Informed Initiative seeks to provide improved access to hazardous waste information and to reduce the burden on data providers. For more information... |
