PA EPA RELEASES FINAL REPORTS ON HAZ. WASTE MIN. AND COMBUSTI

EPA RELEASES FINAL REPORTS ON
HAZARDOUS WASTE MINIMIZATION AND COMBUSTION

EPA's Office of Solid Waste recently released a final "Waste Minimization Plan" (EPA530-R-94-045), a final "Strategy for Hazardous Waste Minimization and Combustion" (EPA530-R-94-044) and its "National Biennial RCRA Hazardous Waste Report" (EPA530-S-94-039). The draft strategy was released in May 1993 as an effort to focus attention on pollution prevention and to improve and strengthen controls governing hazardous waste combustion. The final "Strategy for Hazardous Waste Minimization and Combustion" contains EPA's goals and outlines a series of actions for the Agency's hazardous waste program. EPA sets eight goals and provides a framework for future Agency actions. The final "Waste Minimization Plan" sets a 25 percent voluntary reduction goal by 2000 and a 50 percent goal for 2005 for persistent, toxic and bioaccumulative consitutents in hazardous waste. The Plan reaffirms EPA's preference for source reduction over waste management. EPA also released "The Biennial RCRA Hazardous Waste Report (Based on 1991 Data)" (EPA530-S-039), which provides an overview of national hazardous waste generation and management practices.
