PA EPA CALLS ON TRADE ASSOCIATIONS TO HELP REDUCE BUS. WASTE

FOR RELEASE: MONDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1994

EPA CALLS ON TRADE ASSOCIATIONS TO HELP REDUCE BUSINESS WASTE

EPA has called on 150 leading business associations to join in a voluntary partnership to reduce and recycle materials that would otherwise become trash. The associations are asked to endorse an EPA program, "Wastewi$e," which assists businesses in taking cost-effective actions to reduce solid waste. The trade associations are asked to provide to their member companies information on waste prevention, recycling collection and the purchase or manufacture of recycled products and to encourage the companies to participate in the "Wastewi$e" program. Over 360 companies already participate in "Wastewi$e." Trade associations are in a position to greatly expand the number of participating companies by encouraging environmental leadership among their members. Companies also can expect substantial cost savings through reduced purchasing and disposal costs. EPA will work with involved associations to provide information for companies on setting up packaging reuse systems, paper conservation through double-side copying and electronic communication, waste reduction by eliminating unnecessary packaging and the increased use of recycled products. Information is available to companies and associations by calling the "Wastewi$e" hotline at 1-800-EPAWISE.
