  • Phase II Rule for Cooling Water Intakes Published
    Published in the Federal Register on July 9th, this final rule protects fish, shellfish and other aquatic life from cooling water intake structures at large power plants. This is the first time in the 32-year history of the Clean Water Act that EPA has established a systematic way to address the environmental consequences of power plants that withdraw more than 50 million gallons of water per day. The rule will protect aquatic organisms from being trapped on intake screens or drawn through the cooling systems.

    EPA is accepting applications for grant awards from May 10th until midnight June 24, 2004. Agencies and organizations selected for funding will be knowledgeable in the areas of water quality data analyses and data management, particularly in regard to nutrient and algal relationships, in addition to demonstrating a strong ability to leverage resources.

  • Beach Monitoring and Notification Grants
    EPA is making available nearly $10 million in grants for beach monitoring and notification programs to help eligible coastal states, territories, including those bordering the Great Lakes and tribes meet the new requirements under the BEACH Act. This is the fourth year in a row these grants have been offered, totaling about $32 million since the BEACH ACT passed in October 2000.

  • National List of Beaches
    This document is a picture of the extent of beach monitoring across the country that will help EPA determine how to better implement the BEACH Act. The List also provides information to the public about beaches in their state. EPA will update this list periodically and will publish notices in the Federal Register of any revisions to the National List of Beaches.
