Healthcare: Mercury Challenge Program

EPA is an affiliated governmental organization in Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E), a national voluntary program designed to help healthcare facilities enhance workplace safety, reduce waste and waste disposal costs, and become better neighbors and environmental stewards.

One of the major goals of H2E is to virtually eliminate mercury waste generated by hospitals by 2005. Through the H2E Partners for Change program, hospitals can pledge (see link below) to make changes in their facilities to protect their community's health and the environment. An organization can receive recognition from H2E for their accomplishments, including their efforts towards the elimination of mercury and mercury-containing waste.

The Making Medicine Mercury-Free (MMMF) Award is a one-time award given to Partners that have virtually eliminated mercury and developed policies to sustain the elimination. Many New England hospitals have been doing mercury work since 1998 and may qualify for this national recognition. You can now apply anytime of year. Your facility must meet the specified criteria to be considered for this award. More information on MMMF

New England Mercury Challenge - Partners for Change
The EPA Regional Mercury Challenge program ran in 1999 and 2000. Since the New England hospitals that were part of the regional effort have been incorporated into the national effort, the EPA New England office has discontinued its regional program. A summary of Mercury Challenge Partner efforts are contained in each Partners-to-Partners Mercury Challenge Directory.
