Cover Design:

The oncogene protein H-Ras casts a shadow on a pattern from the Game of Life, symbolic of the interdependence of multiple levels within biological systems. The structure of truncated Harvey-Ras protein complexed with a guanosine triphosphate analog was solved by Krengel, Scheffzek, Kabsch, Wittinghofer, and Pai (Brookhaven Protein Databank reference 121P). The molecules were rendered with the MidasPlus program from the Computer Graphics Laboratory (CGL, supported by NIH RR-01081), University of California, San Francisco. The background pattern is from John Conway's Game of Life cellular automaton, as implemented by Gil Rivlis, University of Arizona. Cover design and creation by Elaine Meng with assistance from other CGL members.
