AirData Reports and Maps Get Additional Pollutants, More Data

Two air pollutants, PM2.5 (particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers) and 8-hour average ozone concentrations, have been added to AirData reports and maps. In addition, five more years of data are available (11 years), and more descriptive information about air monitors.

Tuesday - August 6, 2002

Addition of materials related to the March 2002 EPA Office of Inspector General's (OIG) report (PDF 197KB) on EPA and State progress in title V permit issuance.

The documents added to the site include the OIG original report, and the Office of Air and Radiation's (OAR) official Correspondence (PDF 11KB) and Action Plan (PDF 21KB) in response to that report.

Tool tips added to maps

Place your mouse pointer on items shown in AIRData maps and get detailed information in a pop-up "tool tip." This new feature allows you to identify individual air pollution sources or monitoring sites, and shows county names, too. Tool tips are available in zoom-able maps (the default), which are displayed by a Java applet. Maps displayed as standard GIF images do not have the tool tips feature.

The chameleons speak Spanish, too! The AQI kids website has been translated into Spanish providing a new resource for Spanish speaking children and teachers.

EPA responses to citizens' allegations of deficiencies in State and
local air operating permits programs

On December 19, 2001, a Web page was added that contains EPA responses to citizens' allegations of deficiencies in State and local air operating permits programs, as announced in a recent Notice of Availability. The citizen letters were submitted to EPA consistent with a 90-day comment period provided by EPA (12/11/2000 to 3/12/2001).

Russia Air Management Program (RAMP) report

The Russia Air Management Program (RAMP) report highlights the development, practical demonstration and evaluation of alternative approaches for improving air quality management policies and practices in Russia. The City of Volgograd, located south of Moscow, was chosen as the site for the RAMP pilot project.

2000 Air Quality Trends Summary Report

The 2000 Air Quality Trends Summary Report has been released. Trends Reports are EPA's "report card" on the status of air quality and air pollutant emissions. Reports are published annually, about ten months after year-end. Complete trends reports are published every two years, and summary reports every year. (http://www.epa.gov/airtrends/) .

Air Quality Index (AQI) Kids Page Added

The new Air Quality Index (AQI) Kids Web site is now available at http://www.epa.gov/airnow/aqikids/ The site features three chameleons -- K.C., Koko, and Kool -- who lead the kids through air quality information and two games. The major topic pages in the site are "Clean & Dirty Air," "What is the AQI?," "Air Pollution and Health," "What Can I Do?," and
"Games" ("AQI Game Show" and "AQI Color Game").

AIRNOW debuts for 2001 Ozone Season

The AIRNow website has a new look to allow easier navigation throughout the site. However, AIRNow still contains many useful data products from the original site. Real-time Ozone Maps, Air Quality forecasts, and links to State and local Air Quality websites are all still available on the AIRNow website.

Daily ozone forecasting begins today for many areas of the country. Generation of ozone maps will begin May 1, 2001! Check here frequently for availability of maps and the addition of new participating areas.

Map Zoom Capability Added to AIRS Graphics

The AIRS Graphics website has been enhanced by adding the capability enlarge (zoom) maps and charts that you create. The zoom capability, provided by a Java applet, is now the default way of viewing maps, but standard GIF images also are available by changing AIRS Graphics Preferences.
