Approved Methods for Unregulated Contaminants

Image of test tubes

The 1996 Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act require monitoring for certain contaminants to which maximum contaminant levels do not apply. On September 17, 1999, EPA published final revisions to the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR). A Fact Sheet is available that describes the major provisions of the rule. The rule was supplemented on March 2, 2000, and again on January 11, 2001.

The UCMR Monitoring List includes thirty-five contaminants which were identified as occurence priorities on the Contaminant Candidate List, and two radionuclides that emerged during regulation development. The UCMR Monitoring List is comprised of three separate lists based on analytical methods readiness and current contaminant occurrence data: List 1 for Assessment Monitoring, List 2 for Screening Survey and List 3 for Pre-Screen Testing.

List 1 - Assessment Monitoring

List 1 includes twelve chemical contaminants for which analytical methods exist or have recently been established. Monitoring of List 1 contaminants will occur at large PWS and a representative sample of small PWS.

Screening Surveys for List 2 Contaminants

Screening Survey - List 2 Chemical Contaminants

This includes contaminants for which analytical methods exist or have recently been established. Monitoring of List 2 chemical contaminants will occur at small PWS selected for the Screening Survey in 2001, and large PWS selected for the Screening Survey in 2002.

List 3 - Pre-Screen Testing

List 3 contaminants have newly emerged as drinking water concerns and, in most cases, only have methods in an early stage of development. Monitoring for List 3 contaminants will be performed only after future rulemaking specifies methods to determine whether a listed contaminant occurs in sufficient frequency in the most vulnerable systems or sampling locations to warrant its being included in future Assessment Monitoring or Screening Surveys.
