Description

Postmenopausal hormone use usually involves hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with either estrogen alone or in combination with progestin to compensate for the decrease in natural hormones that occurs at menopause. Estrogen is a natural hormone manufactured primarily by the ovaries. It is involved in the development and maintenance of secondary sex characteristics such as breasts in females and affects many aspects of women's physical and emotional health. Progestins are preparations that have effects similar to those of the natural hormone progesterone, which is primarily responsible for regulating the reproductive cycle. Among women who use postmenopausal hormones, women who have had their uterus removed use estrogen alone, whereas women with a uterus take a combination of estrogen plus progestin.
