For Immediate Release
Office of Mrs. Bush
July 18, 2002

Remarks by Mrs. Bush at A Toast to Madam Jolanta Kwasniewska - Philadelphia
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

As delivered.

Thank you. I am delighted to bring Madam Jolanta Kwasniewska to Philadelphia - where the United States was born, and where our country's founding principles of independence, freedom and democracy were crafted and sealed on paper.

This State Visit of President Kwasnieski and Madam Kwasniewska underscores the United States' strong relationship with Poland - and the affection that Americans have for the people of Poland.which dates back to Revolutionary times here in Philadelphia.

Our countries, despite a different geography and history, share the same respect for freedom and liberty. The Polish people fought peacefully for their freedom over the past half century. They succeeded in achieving it.

Our constitutions are similar. And our goals for our people are the same. We believe that all people should be free, and equal - and we strive to defend and protect those ideals.

When we visited Poland last year, President Bush said, "Our countries know what faith, commitment and integrity can build. Our partnership is going to last a long time."

This State Visit reinforces that promise, and we look forward to building on an already positive relationship. More than 9 million Americans claim Polish descent. The bonds between our two nations are very strong.

Madam Kwasniewska, I offer a toast to you and the friendship between our two countries. To Poland and the United States of America.
