For Immediate Release
Office of Mrs. Bush
September 25, 2002

American Embassy Greeting by Laura Bush - Mexico
Mexico City, Mexico

As delivered.

John, thank you for your devoted service to the United States of America, and your hospitality.

Thanks, too, to all the coordinators, control officers, site officers, administrative personnel, and other support staff - 440 American employees who have worked so hard to make this visit to Mexico, a success.

And congratulations to James McAnulty and Willem Brakel, who have received distinguished Department of State awards this year.

I want to recognize the Embassy's 450 Mexican staff members. Gracias! We value your service at this Embassy, just as we value our friendship with Mexico.

I was interested to learn that three of you have such long-standing service that combined, you have served this embassy for nearly a century.

Thank you:

Ciro Moreno Jacobo (38 years of service);

Arturo Montano Robles (30 years of service); and

Yolanda de Rubio (26 years)

for your devoted service. I salute you.

The United States and Mexico share not only a border, but also a history. Our future rises over the same horizon, and our goals for our people are the same.

When Mexico suffers any kind of loss, but especially that of life and property, we share their grief. President Bush and I want the people of Mexico to know that our thoughts are with those who have been affected by Hurricane Isidore (even as our Gulf Coast states are bracing against the storm).

The American people rely on our diplomats to promote trade and travel, and to report on important political and economic developments around the world. More importantly, we count on you to portray the face of America -- as compassionate, caring people. And you're doing a great job.

As representatives of the United States of America, you spend your time creating positive relations with our friends and neighbors in Mexico and other countries.

President Bush joins me in thanking you for your kindness and your dedicated service.

I will always remember my stay in Mexico City. This city holds a special place in my heart, because 25 years ago this November, President Bush and I spent our wedding night here on our way to Cozumel for our honeymoon.

Thank you for putting together a wonderful program, and thank you for representing the United States with pride.
