Drinking Water Infrastructure Needs Survey

NDS logo The 1996 SDWA Amendments directed EPA to conduct a survey of the infrastructure needs facing public water systems every four years - with the first report published in 1997.  The second survey released in 2001 estimates that drinking water systems will need to invest $150.9 billion over a 20 year period to ensure the continued provision of safe drinking water.  Results from the survey are used to develop a formula to allot Drinking Water State Revolving Fund grants.

The Clean Water and Drinking Water Infrastructure Gap Analysis Report (EPA 816-R-02-020, September 2002) discusses a potential gap between projected investment needs and projected spending for drinking water and wastewater infrastructure. The report provides an important empirical basis for discussions addressing the critical needs of our nation's water infrastructure. Report (PDF) ~ Fact Sheet (PDF)
