NSF Appoints George O. Strawn as Chief Information Officer

The National Science Foundation has appointed George O. Strawn as its chief information officer.

Strawn will oversee all aspects of information technology acquisition, management and application for the foundation, a 1,500-member federal agency.

Strawn joined the foundation in 1995 and served as the director of the Division of Advanced Networking Infrastructure and Research until 1998. In 1999 he became the executive officer of the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering. He was the directorate's acting assistant director from September 2001 to May 2002.

While at NSF he co-chaired the Federal Networking Council, the interagency Large Scale Networking Working Group, and the Coordinating Committee on Intercontinental Research Networks. He was the United States representative on the G-7 task force for the Global Interconnection of Broadband Networks.

Strawn came to the foundation from Iowa State University, where he served as director of the Computation Center, as chair of the Computer Science Department, and as assistant dean in the College of Science and Humanities.

He earned a doctorate in mathematics from Iowa State University in 1969.
