Statement by Dr. Diana Natalicio
Vice Chair, National Science Board

On PACI

The National Science Board's selection of two new awardees for the Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure program marks a turning point for the Nation's computing infrastructure.

When NSF first became involved in the support of supercomputer centers, the Internet did not exist and the state-of-the art supercomputers could accomplish less than today's desktop workstation. Clearly in a field that moves so quickly, we sometimes need to make the difficult choice to stop doing something good to enable something great.

I am very excited about the direction of this new program. It will keep the United States ahead in all fields of science and engineering while also pushing the technological advances that will fuel future economic growth. Students and scientists at all levels will enjoy a vast resource for education and training. The partnerships at the core of this program and of the successful proposals will also increase opportunities for more people to use these resources and to push the frontiers of knowledge.

I congratulate the National Computational Science Alliance in Illinois and the National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure in California for their successful proposals in the new program.
