Statement by Dr. Richard N. Zare
Chairman, National Science Board

On President Clinton's Intent to Nominate Dr. Rita R. Colwell as Director, National Science Foundation

President Clinton's proposal to nominate Rita Colwell as NSF Director is good news. With Neal Lane moving up to become the President's science and technology advisor, the choice of Dr. Colwell as the next NSF Director completes a magnificent "daily double" for U.S. science and engineering.

Dr. Colwell is someone I deeply admire. She has achieved success and international recognition as a microbiologist, teacher, and manager. Most impressive to me is the ease with which she takes complicated scientific phenomena and connects them to our everyday lives. This rare ability to distill and convey the greater human impact of scientific findings makes Dr. Colwell a superb choice to lead the National Science Foundation.

Editors: Dr. Zare will be available on February 13th at (650) 723-3062 or via e-mail: zare@stanford.edu.
