Press Statement - August 19, 1996
Statement by Dr. Neal Lane
Director, National Science Foundation
On Appointment of Acting Deputy Director
I am pleased to name Joseph Bordogna as acting deputy director of the
National Science Foundation, effective September 16. Dr. Bordogna will
relieve Dr. Anne Petersen, NSF's deputy director since September 1994,
who has accepted a senior position with the Kellogg Foundation.
While I deeply regret Anne Petersen's departure, I am delighted that
this will be a smooth transition. Joe Bordogna brings to this
position the management strength, organizational skills, professional
reputation, and knowledge of NSF that are so essential to the deputy
director's job.
Bordogna came to NSF from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991, and
since then has headed NSF's Directorate for Engineering. An engineer
by training and profession, he has received numerous engineering
awards. His strong connections with industry have helped to move NSF,
and the entire science and engineering community, toward increased
university-industry collaboration. He was a member of the
Pennsylvania Governor's team which developed the Ben Franklin
Partnership, the State of Pennsylvania's technology deployment
initiative. No stranger to policy-making, Bordogna has been a leader
in many NSF policy-setting activities. He has actively represented
NSF in a variety of committees and working groups of the National
Science and Technology Council (NSTC).
Like the director, NSF's deputy director is presidentially appointed.
Joe Bordogna is exactly the right person to keep NSF moving along the
right track until a permanent deputy is nominated by the President and
confirmed by the Senate.
