To provide data users with the most timely data possible, the data tables from the report are being made available while the printed report is being prepared. These tables contain statistical data on Federal funding of the research and development (R&D;) components of agency programs, as proposed by the administration for fiscal year (FY) 2000. Also, detailed data include actual Federal funding of R&D; in FY 1998 and estimated funding of R&D; in FY 1999. The historical tables present Federal R&D; funding by function for fiscal years 1955-2000 and Federal funding of basic research for fiscal years 1978-2000. The statistics in the tables are considered final and are not expected to be revised. These tables could appear in the printed report with format changes to conform with report publication guidelines and procedures.
