Northern Temperate Lakes LTER/Park Falls Tall Tower, Wisconsin FluxNETTest Site Information
The Park Falls tower site is located in the Chequamegon National Forest, about 15 km east of Park Falls, Wisconsin. The Chequamegon National Forest covers approximately 325,000 ha of forested land with low relief. The dominant forest types are mixed northern hardwoods, aspen, and wetlands. The region immediately surrounding the tower is dominated by second-growth boreal lowland and wetland forests typical of the region. The area is currently under management for recreational uses, timber extraction, and to maintain biological diversity. The Park Falls tower is part of the Ameriflux network which is sponsored jointly by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The tower is 447 meters tall and instrumented at a number of heights. Research at the site addresses carbon balance, dynamics of the planetary boundary layer, biogenic sources of methane, and pollution influences. The land cover map for the Park Tower site was obtained from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The map is in Transverse projection (datum HPGN, spheroid GRS 1980, false northing 520000, false easting -4480000) with upper left corner coordinates of 618500 north, 489000 east and a pixel size of 30 meters. Product Request for the Northern Temperate Lakes LTER/Park Falls Tall Tower, Wisconsin FluxNET GLCTS ProductGo to GLCTS Project ServerNorthern Temperate Lakes LTER/Park Falls Tall Tower, Wisconsin FluxNET Header FileProject Description:The purpose of the Global LandCover Test Sites (GLCTS) project is to develop a multitemporal and multi-resolution satellite data set for a selection of global test sites to support the research development of land cover characterization and the testing and validation of improved algorithms for EOS. The sites selected represent a wide range of global land cover types, are well characterized on the ground with on-going field-based monitoring programs, and are of interest to the international global change research community. The primary component of the data set will be historical and recent Landsat data and a series of daily AVHRR 1km data acquisitions in a 500 Km by 500 Km window centered on the site. Digital elevation data and land cover information will be also included for each site. As with all the Pathfinder projects, this activity will help provide experience with which to develop the data and information system for EOS. In particular, problems associated with developing registered multi-resolution and multi-source data sets, providing tools for data extraction, and developing the appropriate metadata and information management systems will be addressed. The targeted user-community for this product includes: researchers developing regional and global scale land cover assessments; researchers developing improved algorithm for surface parameterization; and field scientists working at the test sites wanting to explore the application of remote sensing.
