The Harvard Forest has been used for research and education in forest biology since 1907. The site includes approximately 3000 acres of land and includes mixed hardwood and conifer forests, ponds, extensive spruce and maple swamps, white pine and hemlock, and conifer plantations. The site was established as part of the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) network in 1988. The Fisher Museum and Torrey Laboratories in Petersham, Massachusetts provide office and laboratory space, computer and greenhouse facilities, and a lecture room and lodging for seminars and conferences. An additional six houses and apartments provide housing for staff, visiting researchers and students. Extensive records of plant research, long-term data sets and historical information are maintained in the Harvard Forest archives.

Research at the site has traditionally focused on silviculture and forest management, soils and the development of forest site concepts, the biology of temperate and tropical trees, forest ecology and economics and ecosystem dynamics. LTER and site related research currently includes research in:

  • long-term climate change disturbance history and vegetation dynamics;
  • comparison of community, population, and plant architectural responses to human and natural disturbance;
  • forest-atmosphere trace gas fluxes;
  • organic matter accumulation, decomposition and mineralization; and
  • element cycling, fine root dynamics and forest microbiology.

Site researchers are also participating in the LTER MODLERS project ( http://atlantic.evsc.virginia.edu/~jhp7e/modlers/ ) which is developing a validation strategy for land cover, leaf area index, and net primary productivity products to be derived from the MODIS sensor on the NASA Earth Observing System (EOS).

The land cover map for the Harvard Forest was provided by the site investigator. It is based on a classification of Thematic Mapper imagery which was developed for the MODLERS effort within the LTER site network.with the data sets.

Project Description:

The purpose of the Global LandCover Test Sites (GLCTS) project is to develop a multitemporal and multi-resolution satellite data set for a selection of global test sites to support the research development of land cover characterization and the testing and validation of improved algorithms for EOS. The sites selected represent a wide range of global land cover types, are well characterized on the ground with on-going field-based monitoring programs, and are of interest to the international global change research community. The primary component of the data set will be historical and recent Landsat data and a series of daily AVHRR 1km data acquisitions in a 500 Km by 500 Km window centered on the site. Digital elevation data and land cover information will be also included for each site.

As with all the Pathfinder projects, this activity will help provide experience with which to develop the data and information system for EOS. In particular, problems associated with developing registered multi-resolution and multi-source data sets, providing tools for data extraction, and developing the appropriate metadata and information management systems will be addressed. The targeted user-community for this product includes: researchers developing regional and global scale land cover assessments; researchers developing improved algorithm for surface parameterization; and field scientists working at the test sites wanting to explore the application of remote sensing.

Site Description:

The Harvard Forest research site includes mixed hardwood and conifer forests, ponds, extensive spruce and maple swamps, white pine and hemlock, and conifer plantations. The site was established as part of the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) network in 1988. Extensive records of plant research, long-term data sets and historical information are maintained in the Harvard Forest archive.

Data Format and Organization:

Data are distributed on a series of low and high density 8 mm tapes, organized by data type. A copy of this header file is the first record on each tape and it will also include specific format and organization data for each tape.

Tape 1 (ancillary, gif, dem data and first 1/3 of AVHRR data):
