This Howland, Maine site was established by the University of Maine about 35 miles north of Bangor, Maine and is located within the Northern Experimental Forest of International Paper. The site is currently supported by the Global Change Program of the USDA Forest Service. The site covers about 7000 hectares, including several intensive experimental sites where detailed ecological data are available. The site contains an assortment of small plantations, multi-generation clearings, and large natural forest stands. The natural stands in this boreal-northern hardwood transitional forest consist of hemlock-spruce-fir, aspen-birch, and hemlock-hardwood mixtures. The region has relatively little topographic relief, but soil drainage classes vary greatly over short distances.

Scientists from the University of Maine are performing long-term eddy correlation flux measurements of CO2, sensible heat, latent heat, and momentum. This work is supported by a well-instrumented, 25 meter tall flux tower at the site. Scientists associated with NASA's Forest Ecosystem Dynamics (FED) Project have been performing research at the site to model and monitoring ecosystem processes in response to natural and anthropogenic effects. The FED project uses coupled ecosystem models and remote sensing models and measurements to predict and observe ecosystem change. Since 1990, The Woods Hole Research Center has been an active collaborator at the Howland site, participating in the measurement of CO2 profiles and soil CO2 fluxes. The Howland, Maine site is also a member of the AmeriFlux Network that is working to quantify the magnitude of net annual CO2 exchange in major ecosystem/biome types and the response of CO2 fluxes to changes in environmental factors and climate change.

The land cover map for the Howland Forest site was obtained from NASA's Forest Ecosystem Dynamics (FED) project web site. The map is in UTM projection (zone 19, WGS84 datum) with upper left corner coordinates of 517803 north, 5012300 east and a pixel size of 15 meters.

Project Description:

The purpose of the Global LandCover Test Sites (GLCTS) project is to develop a multitemporal and multi-resolution satellite data set for a selection of global test sites to support the research development of land cover characterization and the testing and validation of improved algorithms for EOS. The sites selected represent a wide range of global land cover types, are well characterized on the ground with on-going field-based monitoring programs, and are of interest to the international global change research community. The primary component of the data set will be historical and recent Landsat data and a series of daily AVHRR 1km data acquisitions in a 500 Km by 500 Km window centered on the site. Digital elevation data and land cover information will be also included for each site.

As with all the Pathfinder projects, this activity will help provide experience with which to develop the data and information system for EOS. In particular, problems associated with developing registered multi-resolution and multi-source data sets, providing tools for data extraction, and developing the appropriate metadata and information management systems will be addressed. The targeted user-community for this product includes: researchers developing regional and global scale land cover assessments; researchers developing improved algorithm for surface parameterization; and field scientists working at the test sites wanting to explore the application of remote sensing.

Site Description:

The Howland Forest site was established by the University of Maine within International Paper's Northern Experimental Forest. The site includes several intensive experimental sites, has a well-instrumented 25 meter flux tower, and has been made part of the Ameriflux network of flux measurement sites. Research at the site includes work being performed by NASA's Forest Ecosystem Dynamics (FED) project, NOAA's Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion Division, and the Wood's Hole Research Center.

Data Format and Organization:

Data are distributed on a series of low and high density 8 mm tapes, organized by data type. A copy of this header file is the first record on each tape and it will also include specific format and organization data for each tape.

Tape 1 (ancillary, gif, dem data and first 1/3 of AVHRR data):
