The Jasper Ridge Preserve is located in the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains in California. Vegetation at the site is representative of the California central coast range. This site has had a long history of significant research in ecology and population biology, including long term studies that are landmarks in ecology. From 1891 to 1995, over 150 Stanford students have completed advanced degrees based on research done wholly at the preserve.

Studies of the dynamics and genetics of lepidopteran populations at Jasper Ridge have had major scientific impact in several areas, including the definition of species and populations, the theory of coevolution, and the unique importance of long-term research in ecology. For more than a decade, a collaborative ecosystem study has probed natural and reconstructed grassland communities to understand the regulation of system properties by individual species, functional groups, and disturbance regimes.

Effects of elevated CO2 on nutrient cycling and availability, litter quality and decomposition, root physiology, biomass partitioning, below ground respiration, plant water use, and interactions with grazing Ongoing monitoring programs employ a variety of techniques to track ecological processes including inventories and the use of remote sensing to determine the status and distribution of vegetation.

In April, Princeton University and Carnegie Institution collaborators explored aerial balloon photography to obtain "airphotos" at higher resolution than airplanes provide. From tethered balloons with suspended cameras and video monitor, very high resolution images of several 0.1 ha serpentine grassland plots were obtained for studies of spatial dynamics of serpentine plant species and long-term gopher exclosure studies; several other continuing studies of spatial patterning will also use the images.

Complete video coverage of the Preserve was obtained, generating 120 minutes of video tape and over 200,000 images referenced to global coordinates.

The ultimate tool for studying spatial relationships and linking many different kinds of geographic information is a geographic information system (GIS).

Andrew Weiss , GIS manager at Stanford's Center for Conservation Biology, has developed a Jasper Ridge GIS that currently runs on workstations at the Center.

The regional land cover map which includes the Jasper test site was produced by the Biogeography Laboratory of the Geography Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara. This product is a pre-release from the GAP vegetation map being produced in coordination with the U.S. National Biological Service. Land cover classes have been aggregated from the original product. For more information on the original land cover products contact the Biogeography Lab at http://www.biogeog.ucsb.edu/ .

The map is in a UTM projection with a 120 meter cell size and an approximate upper left UTM coordinate of 537336 E, 4184643 N.

Project Description:

The purpose of the Global LandCover Test Sites (GLCTS) project is to develop a multitemporal and multi-resolution satellite data set for a selection of global test sites to support the research development of land cover characterization and the testing and validation of improved algorithms for EOS. The sites selected represent a wide range of global land cover types, are well characterized on the ground with on-going field-based monitoring programs, and are of interest to the international global change research community. The primary component of the data set will be historical and recent Landsat data and a series of daily AVHRR 1km data acquisitions in a 500 Km by 500 Km window centered on the site. Digital elevation data and land cover information will be also included for each site.

As with all the Pathfinder projects, this activity will help provide experience with which to develop the data and information system for EOS. In particular, problems associated with developing registered multi-resolution and multi-source data sets, providing tools for data extraction, and developing the appropriate metadata and information management systems will be addressed. The targeted user-community for this product includes: researchers developing regional and global scale land cover assessments; researchers developing improved algorithm for surface parameterization; and field scientists working at the test sites wanting to explore the application of remote sensing.

Site Description:

The Jasper Ridge Preserve is located in the northeast foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains in California and is managed by Stanford University. The site has had a long history of research in ecology and population biology. Research at the site includes studies of the regulation of system properties by individual species, functional groups, and disturbance regimes. Researchers are also studying the effects of elevated CO2 on nutrient cycling and availability, litter quality and decomposition, root physiology, biomass partitioning, below ground respiration, plant water use, and interactions with grazing.

Data Format and Organization:

Data are distributed on a series of low and high density 8 mm tapes, organized by data type. A copy of this header file is the first record on each tape and it will also include specific format and organization data for each tape.

Tape 1 (ancillary, gif, dem data and first 1/3 of AVHRR data):
