The Konza Prairie Research Natural Area (KPRNA) is located in the Flint Hills of eastern Kansas and is representative of native tallgrass prairie. The tallgrass or bluestem prairie of the Konza LTER is one of the major ecosystem types of the conterminous United States (exceeded in area only by eastern deciduous forest). Undisturbed examples of tallgrass prairie are rare, however, because this ecosystem type has been extensively converted to agroecosystems. The Konza LTER has a temperate, mid-continental climate. The January mean temperature is -3C (range -9C to 3C) and the July mean is 27C (range 20C to 33C). Annual precipitation is 835 mm of which about 75% occurs in the growing season. Mean snowfall for January is 150 mm with an annual total of 521 mm.

The Konza Prairie is managed to provide an array of burning and grazing treatments to facilitate research to evaluate the effects of fire and grazing on plant composition, primary production, consumer density and diversity, nutrient dynamics, soil chemistry, and hydrology. This natural prairie also serves as a reference site for comparison to manipulated agricultural systems. Woody plants have been mapped according to species and size on some portions of the site. Species lists have also been developed for a number of animal groups including birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.

The First ISLSCP (International Satellite Land Surface Climatology Project) Field Experiment (FIFE) was conducted on the Konza Prairie. The monitoring effort, which operated more or less continuously through 1987, 1988 and 1989 consisted of acquisition of AVHRR, Landsat, SPOT, and GOES satellite data; continuous acquisition of data from automated meteorological stations within the site; collection of gravimetric soil moisture surveys; streamflow and biometric measurements; and observations of atmospheric optical properties.

The land cover map is derived from a product which was created by the Kansas Applied Remote Sensing Program at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. The original classification was created from Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery. The original data and descriptive files are available from the Data Access Support Center of the Kansas Geological Survey ( http://gisdasc.kgs.ukans.edu/dasc.html ) in Arc/Info export file format. Quantitative accuracy assessments are provided with the data sets.

The landcover map is in UTM projection (zone 14) with an upper left corner coordinate of 4395119N, 591581E and a cell size of 100 meters.

Konza Prarie LTER Header File

Project Description:

The purpose of the Global LandCover Test Sites (GLCTS) project is to develop a multitemporal and multi-resolution satellite data set for a selection of global test sites to support the research development of land cover characterization and the testing and validation of improved algorithms for EOS. The sites selected represent a wide range of global land cover types, are well characterized on the ground with on-going field-based monitoring programs, and are of interest to the international global change research community. The primary component of the data set will be historical and recent Landsat data and a series of daily AVHRR 1km data acquisitions in a 500 Km by 500 Km window centered on the site. Digital elevation data and land cover information will be also included for each site.

As with all the Pathfinder projects, this activity will help provide experience with which to develop the data and information system for EOS. In particular, problems associated with developing registered multi-resolution and multi-source data sets, providing tools for data extraction, and developing the appropriate metadata and information management systems will be addressed. The targeted user-community for this product includes: researchers developing regional and global scale land cover assessments; researchers developing improved algorithm for surface parameterization; and field scientists working at the test sites wanting to explore the application of remote sensing.

Site Description:

Data Format and Organization:

Data are distributed on a series of low and high density 8 mm tapes, organized by data type. A copy of this header file is the first record on each tape and it will also include specific format and organization data for each tape.
