The Mkomazi Game Reserve (MGR) lies in north-eastern Tanzania between Mount Kilimanjaro and the coast. It covers an area of approximately 3250 km2 forming the southern limit of the Tsavo ecosystem (it borders the Tsavo West National Park in Kenya to the north). The southern edge of most of the Reserve lies at the foot of the Pare and Usambara Mountains which have a significant influence on the climate and vegetation. The Reserve generally rises inland from 300m in the east to 800m in the west. From the central part of the Reserve towards the west there are hills (outliers from the Pare and Usambara Mountains) which rise several hundred metres to over 1500m in places. These hills comprise a small percentage of the total area of the Reserve (less than 7%) but have important vegetation communities.

Research prior to the 1980s is limited and includes studies of the mammal populations and vegetation. Since 1993 the Mkomazi Ecological Research Programme of the Department of Wildlife, Tanzania and the Royal Geographical Society, UK has studied the ecology of the Reserve with the aim of describing the distribution, abundance and diversity of the flora and fauna. The purpose of this work was to provide information relevant to the management planning processes of the Department of Wildlife. Information was gathered on vegetation dynamics, mammal distribution and abundance, invertebrate, bird, reptile and amphibian diversity, soil geo-chemistry and meteorology.

Current research under the Darwin Initiative Biodiversity Project is amplifying data on vegetation dynamics, mammal, bird and invertebrate distribution, and soil geochemistry. The project will use these ground data in combination with satellite-derived data to map biodiversity and develop a methodology for monitoring changes in biodiversity in response to various management practices. MGR is being developed for the Global Observatories Programme (GOP) which is co-ordinated by the U.K. Royal Geographical Society. The GOP sites are to serve as long-term field study centers, including site facilities, field staff, and long term monitoring and research activities.

Various Tanzanian collaborations are fundamental to the research activities in MGR. The Serengeti Wildlife Research Institute is responsible for coordinating research in protected areas in Tanzania. The Department of Wildlife is responsible for the management of Game Reserves. Locally to MGR, the Tropical Pesticides Research Institute and the African College of Wildlife Management are involved in various long-term training and research activities within the MGR.

Project Description:

The purpose of the Global LandCover Test Sites (GLCTS) project is to develop a multitemporal and multi-resolution satellite data set for a selection of global test sites to support the research development of land cover characterization and the testing and validation of improved algorithms for EOS. The sites selected represent a wide range of global land cover types, are well characterized on the ground with on-going field-based monitoring programs, and are of interest to the international global change research community. The primary component of the data set will be historical and recent Landsat data and a series of daily AVHRR 1km data acquisitions in a 500 Km by 500 Km window centered on the site. Digital elevation data and land cover information will be also included for each site.

As with all the Pathfinder projects, this activity will help provide experience with which to develop the data and information system for EOS. In particular, problems associated with developing registered multi-resolution and multi-source data sets, providing tools for data extraction, and developing the appropriate metadata and information management systems will be addressed. The targeted user-community for this product includes: researchers developing regional and global scale land cover assessments; researchers developing improved algorithm for surface parameterization; and field scientists working at the test sites wanting to explore the application of remote sensing.

Data Format and Organization:

Data are distributed on a series of low and high density 8 mm tapes, organized by data type. A copy of this header file is the first record on each tape and it will also include specific format and organization data for each tape.

DEM in UTM projection, north up orientation: Datum used to create the DEM. GTOPO30 has a horizontal grid spacing of 30-arc seconds (0.0083333333 degrees). The horizontal coordinate system is decimal degrees of latitude and longitude referenced to WGS84. The vertical units represent elevation in meters above mean sea level. The elevation values range from -407 to 8,752 meters. In the DEM, ocean areas have been masked as "no data" and have been assigned a value of -9999. Lowland coastal areas have an elevation of at least 1 meter, so in the event that a user reassigns the ocean value from -9999 to 0 the land boundary portrayal will be maintained. Due to the nature of the raster structure of the DEM, small islands in the ocean less than approximately 1 square kilometer will not be represented.
