The site is a mixed species deciduous forest, growing on rolling terrain. The site is on the Walker Branch Watershed, which is near Oak Ridge, Tennessee and on the U.S. Department of Energy National Environmental Research Park. The forest has a leaf area index in the range between 5 and 6. The trees are about 25 m tall. Main species are oak (Quercus alba, Quercus prinus), maple (Acer rubrum) and pine (Pinus taeda).

The Walker Branch Watershed Project began in 1967 under sponsorship of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission (now the U. S. Department of Energy). Initially, the project centered primarily on the geologic and hydrologic processes that control the amounts and chemistry of water moving through the watershed. Projects have included:

  • U. S. Department of Energy funded studies of watershed hydrology and forest nutrient dynamics,
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration funded studies of forest micrometeorology,
  • studies of atmospheric deposition under the National Atmospheric Deposition Program,
  • the International Biological Program Eastern Deciduous Forest Biome Project,
  • National Science Foundation sponsored studies of trace element cycling and stream nutrient spiraling, and
  • Electric Power Research Institute funded studies of the effects of acidic deposition on canopy processes and soil chemistry.

The site contains a 44 meter walkup tower and two 33 meter towers containing a number of instruments for flux measurements.

The land cover map for the Walker Branch scene was provided by the Environmental Sciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratories. The original map has been reduced by a factor of 2 for display purposes. The map is in State/Plane projection (GRS 1980 spheroid, NAD83 datum, Zone 5301) with upper left corner coordinates of 772725 north, 728925 east. The pixel size of this resampled map is 50 meters.

Project Description:

The purpose of the Global LandCover Test Sites (GLCTS) project is to develop a multitemporal and multi-resolution satellite data set for a selection of global test sites to support the research development of land cover characterization and the testing and validation of improved algorithms for EOS. The sites selected represent a wide range of global land cover types, are well characterized on the ground with on-going field-based monitoring programs, and are of interest to the international global change research community. The primary component of the data set will be historical and recent Landsat data and a series of daily AVHRR 1km data acquisitions in a 500 Km by 500 Km window centered on the site. Digital elevation data and land cover information will be also included for each site.

As with all the Pathfinder projects, this activity will help provide experience with which to develop the data and information system for EOS. In particular, problems associated with developing registered multi-resolution and multi-source data sets, providing tools for data extraction, and developing the appropriate metadata and information management systems will be addressed. The targeted user-community for this product includes: researchers developing regional and global scale land cover assessments; researchers developing improved algorithm for surface parameterization; and field scientists working at the test sites wanting to explore the application of remote sensing.

Site Description:

The Walker Branch Watershed Project began in 1967 under sponsorship of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission (now the U. S. Main species are oak (Quercus alba, Quercus prinus), maple (Acer rubrum) and pine (Pinus taeda) having an LAI between 5 and 6. Research at the site includes studies of forest micro-meteorology and atmospheric deposition. The site contains a 44 meter walkup tower and two 33 meter towers for flux measurements.

Data Format and Organization:

Data are distributed on a series of low and high density 8 mm tapes, organized by data type. A copy of this header file is the first record on each tape and it will also include specific format and organization data for each tape.
