The Walnut Gulch site is a research station for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and is representative of approximately 60 million hectares of brush and grass covered rangeland found throughout the semiarid southwestern United States. Cattle grazing is the predominant land use, with mining, limited urbanization, and recreation making up the remaining areas. The site is semi-arid, with a hot summer and a dry winter. Precipitation at the site is highly variable, with intense and localized convective thunderstorms provided two thirds of the annual rainfall. Though historically covered by grassland, shrubs now dominate two thirds of the Walnut Gulch watershed. The site is well instrumented for hydrologic studies and has a history of research on vegetation response to precipitation and grazing. Recent research activities have expanded research efforts to encompass the entire San Pedro watershed in which Walnut Gulch is a sub-basin. The San Pedro watershed covers an area of 12,000 square kilometers and straddles the U.S./Mexico border.

Research activities at the site address:

  • quantifying the hydrologic cycle and the role of time and space scales for modeling hydrologic processes in arid environments
  • developing natural resource models incorporating erosion
  • separating influences of natural variability from anthropogenic sources with respect to global climate change and associated impacts on water, soil, and vegetation
  • developing decision support systems for water quality and natural resource models
  • conducting cooperative research with Mexico for conservation management and sustainable development.

This site has a history of use for regional scale surface/atmosphere and hydrologic research. In 1990 a campaign named Monsoon '90 collected large amounts of ground, aircraft, and satellite data and combined this data with water and energy balance models for determining large area fluxes from semiarid rangeland. A follow-on study named Walnut Gulch '92 investigated seasonal hydrologic dynamics for the region and tested combined optical/microwave measurement strategies. The site is being used in NASA-funded research for quantifying processes which control the hydrologic cycle in arid/semi-arid regions and for algorithm testing related to the Earth Observing System (EOS). A joint U.S./Mexico study named SALSA-MEX (Semi-Arid Land Surface-Atmospheric Mountain Experiment) is also being planned to improve the understanding of topographic effects on hydrologic and meteorologic processes.

The land cover map is a quick classification of the Walnut Gulch watershed which was created by site personnel using a Thematic Mapper scene acquired in September of 1990. No accuracy assessment has been performed on the product.

The landcover map is in UTM projection (zone 12) with an upper left corner coordinate of 3517000N 578000E and a cell size of 30 meters.

Project Description:

The purpose of the Global LandCover Test Sites (GLCTS) project is to develop a multitemporal and multi-resolution satellite data set for a selection of global test sites to support the research development of land cover characterization and the testing and validation of improved algorithms for EOS. The sites selected represent a wide range of global land cover types, are well characterized on the ground with on-going field-based monitoring programs, and are of interest to the international global change research community. The primary component of the data set will be historical and recent Landsat data and a series of daily AVHRR 1km data acquisitions in a 500 Km by 500 Km window centered on the site. Digital elevation data and land cover information will be also included for each site.

As with all the Pathfinder projects, this activity will help provide experience with which to develop the data and information system for EOS. In particular, problems associated with developing registered multi-resolution and multi-source data sets, providing tools for data extraction, and developing the appropriate metadata and information management systems will be addressed. The targeted user-community for this product includes: researchers developing regional and global scale land cover assessments; researchers developing improved algorithm for surface parameterization; and field scientists working at the test sites wanting to explore the application of remote sensing.
