The annual report, Federal Science and Engineering Support to Universities, Colleges, and Nonprofit Institutions: Fiscal Year 1998, will be published later this year on the World Wide Web (WWW) and in paper form. To provide data users with the most timely statistics possible, this set of tables is being made available while the electronic posting for the WWW and the printed report are being prepared. The statistics in these tables are considered final and are not expected to be revised. These tables could appear in the printed report with minor format changes to conform with report publication guidelines and procedures. These tables, representing the academic sector only, provide statistics of Federal academic science and engineering obligations collected through the Survey of Federal Science and Engineering Support to Universities, Colleges, and Nonprofit Institutions. This annual survey is the only source of information on Federal S&E obligations to individual institutions and includes statistics on Federal S&E obligations by funding category over time, funding agency, type of institution (academic type only in this subset of tables), institutional ranking, and geographic distribution. The full set of tables, which will include data on independent nonprofit institutions and both university-administered and nonprofit-administered Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs), will be available later this year. References to the "Technical Notes" appear in the notes or footnotes of many of the early release tables. The "Technical Notes" contain explanatory text about the survey and can be found as part of the previous year's full survey report and will be part of the full FY 1998 report.
