The Office of Federal Activities' primary areas of responsibility are:

  • coordinating EPA's review of all federal Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) prepared by other agencies under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA);
  • maintaining a national EIS filing system and publishing a weekly notice of EIS documents available for review;
  • assuring that EPA's own actions comply with NEPA and other environmental requirements;
  • providing technical assistance and capacity building for environmental compliance, enforcement and impact assessment in other countries; and
  • working with federal and state agencies, foreign governments and international organizations in order to ensure compliance with United States environmental laws.

The Office of Federal Activities has two divisions and a support office.

The NEPA Compliance Division coordinates EPA's NEPA review program, including the review of EISs and maintaining the national EIS filing system.

The International Enforcement and Compliance Division leads cooperation between federal and state agencies and governments of neighboring countries to promote effective enforcement and compliance of environmental laws along the United States Border. It also helps fulfill the United States' commitments by delivering enforcement and compliance components of environmental assistance worldwide.

The Resource Management and Program Team provides budget and administrative program support.
