Diversity Day 1999

On June 30, 1999, CMS celebrated the First Annual Diversity Day with festivities that allowed employees and guests to reflect upon the contributions of various cultures in our society, to recognize the diverse beneficiary population CMS serves, and to heighten the awareness of the issues and concerns of a diverse culture.  The keynote speaker, Robert Franco, Associated Deputy Director, Office of Operations, Department of Agriculture, addressed the value of diversity in all aspects of our society.  The entertainers provided music and dances from many parts of the world.

The Diversity Day program brought together people from many ethnic backgrounds:  Keith Colston and the "Native American People" group to promote Native American culture; the Latin Rhythms group led by Maria Isoline Eppinal; Sheena Jones, a native of Hawaii; Balinese Dancers led by IGA Ngurah Suparatha; the Dennis Fisher Band; Wayne Penley, a Baltimore musician who played the bagpipe.

There was ethnic food sampling consisting of a Mexican, Asian, Italian, Jewish and American food stations.  The red, white and blue theme with balloons made it a very festive occasion.
