Diversity Day 2001 The Third Annual Diversity Day was held on June 21, 2001. The focus this year was "We Are All Americans". Diversity means inclusion - hiring, developing, promoting, and retaining employees of all races, ethnic groups, religions and ages, the able bodied and people with disabilities, men and women, regional difference, education levels, and class. Both Federal Government as well as the private sector understand and recognize that workforce diversity means strength and vitality. Ruben Jose King-Shaw, Jr., Deputy Administrator and Chief Operating Officer Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services addressed the attendees. Mr. King-Shaw stated that CMS could do a better job of achieving a diverse workforce. He also indicated that CMS will be a place that reflects workforce diversity; a place that capitalizes on the diversity of ideas; a place where people want to work; a place where each of us understands our contribution to the whole; a place with healthy ethnic/cultural representation at all levels of our organization. The keynote speaker was Paul D. Barnes, Deputy Commissioner for Human Resources Social Security Administration. The entertainment included the CMS choir performing a patriotic medley; Cantre, Spanish singers; Tropical ensemble Steel Band; Scottish Dancers; and Irish Dancers. Ethnic food sampling including: fried chicken wings, Italian Sausage, Dim Sum, Mexican Empanadas and Chicken Satay were provided. There was a change of location from the grand tent outside this year to the grand auditorium inside due to a storm the night before that destroyed the tent set-up.
