  Question

How can I receive grants or loans to go to college?

  Answer

To apply for grants or loans to go to college, complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The U.S. Department of Education’s student financial assistance programs include:

  • Grants: Financial aid you do not have to repay.
  • Work-study: Financial aid you earn while enrolled in school that will help pay your educational expenses.
  • Loans: Financial aid you borrow that you must repay with interest.

You can apply for student financial assistance by completing and submitting the FAFSA online. To obtain a hard copy of the FAFSA, call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (EST).  For more information, or to request additional publications on student financial assistance such as the Student Guide and Funding Your Education, call 1-800-433-3243 or download the publications at Student Aid on the Web.

Although the U.S. Department of Education does not offer scholarships, you can find resources about scholarships, including general information, a scholarship checklist and a free scholarship search service at Student Aid on the Web.
