EPA Establishes Permanent National Homeland Security Research Center
EPA has announced the establishment of a permanent National Homeland Security Research Center, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, and a restructuring from the original temporary charter into three divisions: threat and consequence assessment, decontamination and consequence management and water infrastructure protection. With the permanent center, EPA will ensure effective design, implementation and oversight of the research and provide clear lines of communication and facilitate interaction within EPA and with other federal agencies, universities, and private sector and research partners. read more

EPA Establishes National Center for Computational Toxicology and Announces Grant Awards and Solicitation for Bioinformatics Center
EPA Science Advisor and Assistant Administrator for Research and Development Dr. Paul Gilman announced the establishment of the EPA National Center for Computational Toxicology. The Center will advance the science needed to more quickly and efficiently evaluate the potential risk of chemicals to human health and the environment. read more

Children's Environmental Exposure Research Study (CHEERS)
To provide a safe and healthy environment for children, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and its collaborators are launching a landmark study in Duval County, Florida, to learn more about how young children come into contact with household pesticides and other chemicals in their homes. read more

Applications Sought for $3 Million in Grants to Investigate Environmentally Induced Disease in Children

EPA Among the Best Places to Work in Government
In a recent survey, The Partnership for Public Service and the Institute for the Study of Public Policy Implementation at American University announced rankings of the best places to work in the federal government for three demographic groups: employees under 40, minority employees, and women. read more

New Methods for Studying Genetically Modified Pollen
A recent issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reports the results of a study on the ability of a genetically modified (GM) grass, bentgrass, to transfer its genes in the environment. In this study EPA scientists in Corvallis, Oregon, tracked the transfer of genes from experimental plots of GM bentgrass to native grass. Results showed genes from the genetically modified bentgrass were transferred as far as 13 miles from the experimental plots though most gene transfer occurred within 2 miles of the experimental plots. read more

EPA Announces 66 Research Grants to Develop Sustainability Designs
EPA's chief scientist, Dr. Paul Gilman, recently announced that 66 student teams from 51 universities will receive grants of up to $10,000 in support of the projects they've undertaken for the P3 Award competition People, Prosperity, and the Planet-National Student Design Competition . read more

EPA Awards Research Fellowships
To help educate America’s future environmental scientists, Dr. Paul Gilman, EPA Science Advisor and Assistant Administrator for Research and Development today announced the award of 156 research fellowships for students pursuing degrees in environmental studies. Chosen after their applications underwent a rigorous review process, the selected fellows represent 95 universities in 40 states. read more

Particulate Matter Research Program: Five Years of Progress

Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS)
In July 2003, the United States hosted the Earth Observation Summit. The summit brought together 33 nations plus the European Commission to adopt a declaration that signified a political commitment toward the development of a comprehensive, coordinated and sustained Earth Observation System to collect and disseminate improved data, information, and models to stakeholders and decision makers. read more
