Air
- EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) is releasing a report, Response of Surface Water Chemistry to the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, that further documents the success of the Agency's Acid Rain Program. The latest data available in the report confirm a large and widespread decrease in wet sulfate deposition across broad areas of the Northeastern and Upper Midwestern United States. ORD and collaborators conducted extensive monitoring and scientific assessment since 1990 to determine whether control measures have reduced levels of acidity in lakes and streams in five regions of the Upper Midwest and Northeastern U.S. most affected by acid rain. - Source Sampling Fine Particulate Matter: Wood-Fired Industrial Boiler (EPA 600/R-01-106). Fine particulate matter of aerodynamic diameter 2.5 µm or less (PM-2.5) has been implicated in adverse health effects, and a National Ambient Air Quality Standard for PM-2.5 has been promulgated (July 1997) by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. A national network of ambient monitoring stations has been established to assist states in determining areas which do not meet the ambient standard for PM-2.5. For such areas, it is important to determine the major sources of the PM-2.5 so states can devise and institute a control strategy to attain the ambient concentrations set by the standard. - Control of Mercury Emissions from Coal-Fired Electric Utility Boilers: Interim Report (EPA/600/R-01/093). In December 2000, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) announced its intent to regulate mercury emissions from coal-fired electric utility steam generating plants. This report, produced by EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD), National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL), provides additional information on mercury emissions control, following the release of "Study of Hazardous Air Pollutant Emissions from Electric Utility Steam Generating Plants - Final Report to Congress," in February 1998. The first three chapters describe EPA's December 2000 decision to regulate mercury under the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) provisions of the Clean Air Act, coal use in electric power generation, and mercury behavior in coal combustion. Chapters 4-9 report: new information on current electric utility fuels, boilers, and emission control technologies; mercury emissions associated with these diverse technology combinations; results and implications of tests to evaluate the performance of mercury control technologies and strategies; retrofit control cost modeling; and mercury behavior in solid residues from coal combustion. The final chapter summarizes current research and identifies future efforts needed to ensure cost-effective control of mercury emissions. References are provided at the conclusion of each chapter.Full version (in PDF)

EMPACT
- Delivering Timely Water Quality Information to Your Community: The Chesapeake Bay and National Aquarium in Baltimore EMPACT Projects EPA/625/R-02/018 (report) and EPA/625/C/-02/018 (CD). The Technology Transfer and Support Division of the USEPA’s ORD National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL), in conjunction with a multi-agency Chesapeake Bay Project team, has developed this handbook to provide state and local governments and others "How-to" steps needed to design, employ, and maintain water quality monitoring, data management/delivery, and communications systems. The handbook is based on the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking (EMPACT) and Fort McHenry Tidal Wetland Restoration projects. The publication also includes information about lessons-learned and success stories associated with similar projects, as well as sections on interpreting and communicating the significance of the resultant water quality and restoration data.
- Developing and Implementing a Bird Migration Monitoring, Assessment, and Public Outreach Program for Your Community - The BirdCast Project (EPA/625/R-01/007). The handbook presents a case study showing how one bird migration monitoring and outreach program--EMPACT's BirdCast project for the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States--provides information that enables property managers and the general public to assist migratory birds. Abstract (in HTML); Full version (in PDF)
