Air Toxics Program

Air toxics are hazardous air pollutants that may cause cancer, birth defects, or other serious health problems. Under the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, EPA is required to regulate emissions of 188 hazardous air pollutants. These pollutants can come from a variety of sources including, indoor air, point sources (large sources), area sources (smaller sources), and mobile sources. EPA Region 10 (Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington) is working in partnership with state, local and tribal authorities to reduce the emission of hazardous air pollution from all sources in order to better protect public health and the environment in our region.

  The Region 10 Air Toxics Collaboration Website is designed as a communication and collaboration tool to share information regarding air toxics work in Region 10. It has information on current EPA, state, local and tribal-led projects in air toxics, announcements on upcoming events and training, the latest advancements in air toxics monitoring and modeling, and more.

• About Air Toxics

• Air Toxics Regulatory Programs
  A source of national, local and regional regulations of air toxics and criteria air pollutants. These regulations are required under the Clean Air Act (CFR part 61/63). The rules include National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP), New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), and Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT).

• Emissions Inventory
  EPA's Emission Factor and Inventory Group (EPA/OAR/OAQPS/EMAD/EFIG) prepares a national database of air emissions information with input from numerous State and local air agencies, from tribes, and from industry.

• National Air Toxics Assessment (NATA)
  EPA has conducted a National-Scale Air Toxics Assessment (NATA) that looks at risk from 33 air toxics including diesel particulate matter in neighborhoods across the country.

• NSPS/NESHAP in Region 10
  New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) and National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) are federal air quality regulations imposed by the Clean Air Act.
