  • Automotive and Transportation Technology. The INEEL currently supports national priorities for transportation in the areas of Advanced Automotive Technologies (Alternative Fuels) and the Alternative Fuels Transit Bus Program., including key programs in energy storage, and materials and sensors. The INEEL is a DOE lead laboratory for advanced high-power energy storage testing and evaluation for both the Partnership for New Generation Vehicles (PNGV) and the Hybrid Vehicle Propulsion Programs of the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC). The INEEL has developed and standardized the procedures for hybrid energy storage testing and data analysis procedures, which are now used internationally by government and industry developers.
  • Alternative Fuels Transit Bus. The INEEL has converted nearly a hundred fleet vehicles and buses from gasoline to natural gas power. Through its compressed natural gas and liquified natural gas capabilities, it provides clean and efficient transportation while reducing greenhouse gases and dependence on foreign oil. These vehicles provide service to the INEEL and national parks such Yellowstone, and provided transportation at the Atlanta Olympic Games.
  • Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity. The Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity (AVTA) provides fleet managers and other potential advanced technology vehicle users with accurate and unbiased information on vehicle performance by testing vehicles in conjunction with industry partners and distributing the testing results. The AVTA tests hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrid-electric vehicles, and various types of pure electric vehicles from Daimler-Chrysler, General Motors, Ford, Honda, Nissan, and Toyota. The AVTA, through its partnership with Electric Transportation Applications and Arizona Public Service (APS), uses the APS Hydrogen Pilot Plant to fuel vehicles with hydrogen and blends of hydrogen and CNG fuels. The AVTA is also conducting an oil bypass evaluation on INEEL diesel buses and sport utility vehicles that minimizes oil changes and petroleum consumption. DOE's FreedomCAR and Vehicle Technologies Program (Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy) manages the AVTA, which is conducted jointly by the INEEL and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
