Welcome to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Strategic Cost & Performance Management Website

“The key to being able to show the American public the value we provide is by collecting accurate cost information. By fully costing the daily activities supporting our goals, we can better make the critical decisions for allocating our limited available funds. This will allow us to achieve the most benefit for the fish and wildlife resources and their habitats that we manage.” —Marshall Jones

Purpose of ABC Implementation at the Fish and Wildlife Service

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is the Department of Interior's (DOI) Bureau charged with the mission to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and other habitats for the American people. To assist the Service in achieving this mission in the most effective manner, as well as to comply with various Departmental and federal mandates, the FWS is implementing activity-based costing and management (ABC/M). ABC/M is a cost accounting and management tool that will provide the Service with improved visibility into the full costs of daily operations and outputs. It is expected that ABC/M data will be used extensively across the FWS and DOI for process improvement, budget formulation and justification, and performance measurement in upcoming fiscal years.
