United States Fire Administration Releases Incident Command System Self-Study 2nd Edition
EMMITSBURG, MD - Michael D. Brown, Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response, announced today the release of the Web - based Incident Command System (ICS) Self-Study, 2nd Edition, developed by the United States Fire Administration. This new program provides all First Responders with the basic understanding of NIMS compliant ICS and also provides the user with an overview and basic explanation of Incident Command Systems, including organizational structure, positions and functions, responsibilities and considerations.
"Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, our Nation is resolved to better prepare to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States and reduce America's vulnerability to terrorism, major disasters, and other emergencies," said Brown. "These complex and emerging 21st century threats and hazards demand a unified and coordinated national approach to domestic incident management."
This program is being offered to all fire service officers and other first responders and emergency managers, who use, implement, and function within an incident command system and structure. This self-paced program addresses some of the issues described in NFPA Standard 1561. No certificate will be issued for this program. The program has been offered on CD ROM for the past 7 years. It has now been updated and converted to a new Web - based version placed on the NETC Virtual Campus. On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
