Metadata Entry System
To stimulate the creation of basic FGDC-compliant metadata
records for the cataloging of spatial data sets, this Web-based metadata
entry and service system has been written. Designed to be installed on
a UNIX host that will act as a multi-participant NSDI Clearinghouse Node,
this package uses the Isite Z39.50 indexer and server package, several
HTML-based forms, and some perl scripts to collect metadata from users
across a local or wide-area net and immediately make them available for
service in SGML, HTML, and TEXT formats via the Web client and centralized
Z39.50 Clearinghouse Gateway.
This interface is meant to supplement the storage and service of more complete FGDC metadata records collected for data documentation using other metadata tools. Collection of basic metadata using this service provides an introduction to FGDC metadata but may not provide adequate long-term documentation of spatial data sets. The interface is designed to be hosted by organizations interested in collecting metadata from off-site contributors, rather than a long-term service to be maintained by the FGDC.
