Message from the Director Kay Coles James

"The Fed CDP will help Federal agencies meet their succession planning goals and contribute to the Government's efforts to create a high-quality Senior Executive Service leadership corps that draws upon the strength of America's diversity."

A Message from the OPM Director

Nearly 60 percent of the current career Senior Executive Service (SES) corps will be eligible to retire within the next 5 years. It is also predicted that 20 percent of these employees will leave within the next 3 years. Though prospective, these figures represent the loss of a sizable portion of the Government's senior leadership cadre, and unless we all work together to develop a high-quality and diverse candidate pool, we are in danger of facing a critical leadership gap that can adversely impact agency operations.

The SES Federal Candidate Development Program (Fed CDP) is a partnership between the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and participating agencies. The Fed CDP offers a 14-month immersion program that involves participants in educational forums and gives them unrivaled field experiences, including residential executive training and working sessions with White House and Cabinet officials. This program is state-of-the-art in every respect, with a unique Governmentwide orientation that makes it ideally suited for developing leaders in those professions and disciplines that cross agency boundaries: information technology, budget, financial management, human capital management, procurement, and program management.
